frequently asked questions

How does acupuncture work? +

Acupuncture supports your body’s natural ability to heal and rebalance itself. Very fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points to improve circulation, calm the nervous system, and restore balance in the flow of energy (Qi). From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters, enhances blood flow, and helps regulate communication between the brain, hormones, and reproductive organs. Patients often experience improvements like better sleep, reduced stress, and less pain. Acupuncture also plays a key role in reproductive health by supporting healthy menstrual cycles, optimizing ovarian and uterine function, and improving sperm quality. For those in perimenopause, acupuncture helps regulate hormones, ease hot flashes, and improve energy and mood. These effects work together to promote fertility when desired and overall hormonal balance at every stage of life.

Does acupuncture hurt? +

No. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and most patients describe the experience as painless. You may notice a light sensation when a needle is inserted, but it typically subsides within moments. Many people feel relaxed enough to fall asleep during treatment and leave feeling grounded, centered, and renewed.

How does Chinese herbal medicine work? +

Chinese herbal medicine works by looking at how your symptoms fit together to reveal a pattern of imbalance. Herbs are prescribed in formulas tailored to match your specific presentation, rather than treating one symptom at a time. Some herbs cool the body, some warm and strengthen, others nourish or move the blood. By combining them, we can relieve your current symptoms and address the root cause for long-term balance.

Can I refer my family and friends if they are not seeking fertility or hormonal health support? +

Absolutely! While Mother Moon is best known for specializing in fertility and hormonal health, acupuncture can help with a wide variety of conditions. We’re just as happy to treat your dad’s shoulder pain, your coworker’s insomnia, or your brother’s frequent colds as we are to support reproductive health. Acupuncturists are trained as generalists, which means we’re skilled in treating the whole body and a broad range of health concerns.

How often should I get acupuncture? +

Most patients start with weekly treatments, but your care plan will always be tailored to your specific needs and goals. For some, like relieving pain, improving sleep, or reducing stress, results may be felt within a session or two. For long-term goals such as regulating menstrual cycles, supporting fertility, or preparing for pregnancy, more consistent care is often needed to create lasting change. We’ll walk you through a clear plan so you always know what’s next on your healing path. Once your main symptoms have improved or your initial goals are met, many patients transition into maintenance care. This typically means coming in once or twice a month to sustain your progress, support long-term balance, and use acupuncture as a form of preventative care to keep you feeling your best.

What should I expect during my Initial Visit and Report of Findings Visit? +

Both the Initial Visit and the Report of Findings Visit are 90-minute virtual appointments, and each one includes an in-clinic acupuncture session to be scheduled at a different time at no additional cost. The Initial Visit gives you the opportunity to tell me your story in your own words. I’ll follow up with thoughtful questions so I can fully understand your health history and what brought you here. The Report of Findings Visit is where I bring everything together: your diagnosis, a clear treatment plan, and my best recommendations for acupuncture, herbal medicine, supplements, food therapy, and lifestyle support. By the end of these first two visits, I’ll have a deep understanding of your health, and you’ll have a clear path forward. Follow-up visits then focus on checking in with how you’re feeling and continuing treatment with acupuncture to support your progress.

Do you take insurance? +

Mother Moon is not in network with insurance providers. Patients pay at the time of their visit, and we’ll provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. We encourage you to check with your insurance company to see if your plan covers out-of-network acupuncture and, if so, which conditions are included.

Do you accept HSA/FSA? +

Yes, Mother Moon accepts HSA(Health Savings) and FSA (Flex Spending Accounts).
